New Scale Robotics deployed six of its Q-Span Workstation EDU Kits at Monroe Community College’s (MCC’s) Workforce Development (FWD) Center in Rochester, NY.

The company’s Q-Span Workstation EDU Kits come with a Universal Robots UR3e collaborative robot (cobot) mounted on a sturdy mobile workstation table, metrology lab hardware, a cobot teach pendant with URCaps software to control the cobot and run metrology programs, and PC software to log measurement data for analysis.

“U.S. manufacturers are seeking employees with experience in collaborative robots and a basic understanding of metrology for quality control and process improvement,” Stefan Friedrich, Marketing Manager at New Scale Robotics, said. “By adding these courses, the FWD Center continues to give job seekers a competitive edge through hands-on training with the latest and best technologies for advanced manufacturing.”

New Scale Robotics’ kits allow education programs to offer two complementary courses. The first is the UR Program for Education, which covers the fundamentals of controlling cobots. This program includes labs for manipulating objects using conveyors, palletizing and other common robotics use cases in manufacturing.

The second course is New Scale Robotics Intro to Metrology, which covers the basics of metrology and includes labs for automating gauging using robotic calipers. The two programs together total 40 hours of coursework.

“We focus on rapid training, retraining and upskilling of technical workers in demand by local employers,” Dr. Robin Cole, the vice president of Economic and Workforce Development and Career Technical Education at MCC, said. “New Scale Robotics and Universal Robots made it easy for us to expand our FWD Center course offerings with these educational kits, ready to implement and tailored to the needs of technical training programs like ours.”

New Scale Robotics creates smart automation tools for flexible manufacturing. Its products integrate with small cobots to make automation affordable for small- and mid-sized companies. The company specializes in helping manufacturers automate manual gauging.
